Pakistan took over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, as reported by its state media. The country became a non-permanent member of the Council in January 2025 for a two-year term. The presidency is part of this membership.
The post rotates every month among the 15 members, in alphabetical order. This is the eighth time Pakistan has held the position. It last served as UNSC president in 2013. Pakistan was elected to the Council with 182 votes out of 193 in the General Assembly.
Pakistan’s Officials remark
Ambassador Iftikhar, who will preside over the Council meetings on key global issues in July, said he was fully aware of the complex geopolitical scenario, growing instability, and threats to international peace and security, marked by rising conflict. …
“Pakistan is going to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council at a time of global tumult marked by growing instability, escalating conflicts, a complex geopolitical and geostrategic landscape, and serious threats to international peace and security,” the ambassador said.
“We will closely work with other Council members in a spirit of cooperation for collective and timely action… in line with the UN Charter and corresponding to the expectations of the international community,” he said in comments to Pakistan’s Dawn daily.
“As a country that has consistently advocated for dialogue and diplomacy, Pakistan brings a principled and balanced perspective to the Security Council’s work shaped by its experience and longstanding contribution to the UN’s peacekeeping and peace-building efforts,” the Pakistani envoy said in an interview.
Important meetings ahead
Pakistan’s first high-level session on July 22 will focus on promoting international peace through multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution, chaired by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Ahmad said.
A second session on July 24 will address UN cooperation with regional organizations, including a briefing with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, he added.
On India
There is no direct engagement on this matter, but it is still an important issue. As of the month of April, the Pahalgam Attack took place, with the retaliation by Operation Sindoor.
At this, the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty is still on, so definitely Pakistan will try to raise the issue at the UNSC. The tenure of Pakistan would be a new phase in the relations of India and Pakistan.
On Palestine issue
Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram announced plans to raise the Israel-Palestine issue to the ministerial level at the UN Security Council, stressing the body’s duty to protect civilians and uphold international humanitarian law.
“This is our responsibility. We are making our efforts. We will continue to do that, and we hope that we will overcome the obstacles and eventually propose something meaningful from the council — an outcome that contributes to a ceasefire, peace, and stability,” Ahmad said.
He also called for the resumption of the long-delayed conference on a two-state solution, noting that key discussions — especially around the humanitarian crisis in Gaza — remain under close observation at the Security Council.
