A senior Hamas commander, Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa, has been killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City. The targeted strike was confirmed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which said it worked jointly with Israel’s internal security agency to eliminate one of Hamas’ key military figures.
According to an Associated Press report, Al-Issa was considered a central figure in Hamas’ military wing and one of the architects of its internal rebuilding efforts in Gaza. He held the role of Head of Combat Support, overseeing training, logistics, and coordination of combat operations.

Background on Al-Issa
Detail | Information |
---|---|
Full Name | Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa |
Position | Head of Hamas’ Combat Support Division |
Responsibilities | Training, weapons development, rebuilding military infrastructure |
Accused Role | Helped plan the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel |
Israeli authorities said Al-Issa played a significant part in the October 2023 assault that left more than 1,200 people dead and led to over 250 kidnappings. They also claim he was continuing to coordinate attacks in recent days.
In a post on social media, the Israeli military stated:
“Eliminated Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa—one of the founders of Hamas’ military wing. Issa led Hamas’ force build-up, training, and planned the October 7 massacre. The IDF & ISA will continue to locate and eliminate all terrorists involved.”
Humanitarian Toll Continues to Rise
While the military confirmed the strike as a success, the broader situation in Gaza remains dire. As reported by Reuters, multiple air raids were launched across Gaza City and northern regions over the weekend. These strikes hit civilian structures, including a school housing displaced people and a residence in Jabalia.
Gaza’s civil defense authorities reported 37 deaths on Saturday, including at least nine children. Two civilians also lost their lives while waiting in line for food aid in the Netzarim corridor, a central zone where humanitarian distributions are ongoing under heavy monitoring.
Medical infrastructure remains crippled. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and many are operating without adequate power, supplies, or staff. Aid agencies continue to raise alarms about limited access to food and clean water, especially in densely populated zones.
Ceasefire Talks on the Horizon?
Despite the military escalation, there are renewed signs of diplomatic activity. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed confidence that a ceasefire deal could emerge in the coming week.
“We’re working on Gaza and trying to get it taken care of… I think we’re close,” Trump told reporters on Friday.
A U.S. official also confirmed that Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer is expected to travel to Washington next week for further discussions on the Gaza conflict, Iran, and regional security.
The Times Of Israel added in a separate report that international mediators are continuing efforts to secure a phased ceasefire agreement. The proposed plan reportedly includes a 60-day truce, hostage exchange, and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, but key political disagreements remain unresolved.
Hostages Still Held
Roughly 50 hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza, with fewer than half presumed alive. Families of those abducted are growing increasingly desperate, calling on both Israeli officials and global negotiators to prioritize the hostages’ safe return.
Talks between Israel and Hamas have faltered several times since March. While Hamas insists on a complete ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal, Israel remains firm on its demand that Hamas be fully disarmed before agreeing to any permanent truce.
